That's about 180 miles away... she's definitely going to have to move up here. Does she have any family or friends she can stay with? If not, maybe she can find a place to rent within walking distance of the campus (she wouldn't need a car then). But that may be $700 a month.

I took a photography course at the college; I'd prefer to do photography on my own. I suppose a degree could open career opportunities, but then half of photographers are self-employed anyway, so they don't need a degree in it to start with.

Good luck to your daughter!

Hey, sorry for the delay replying to this. My semester is going well, though I won't be getting all A's like last year (lots of hard courses).

I agree; especially as the economy worsens as more fiat dollars are created, it will become increasingly impractical for parents to support their children far away at expensive colleges.

Stetson University (DeLand) has a prestigious music program, but they're a very expensive private college.

I haven't seen any great changes along with the name change either; it's the same place it was as DBCC. There are still signs on lamp posts with the dbcc.edu address which doesn't even work anymore. So the only difference with the name change is mass confusion.

We live in Sarasota and next fall my daughter is going to attend Daytona State for the Photography program. This program is supposed to excellent.... better than Ringling College of Art and Design, which is 5 minutes from my home. When she completes her Associates in Photography, she can then earn her Bachelor's in Photo at UCF. They only teach the last 2 years at UCF, so one has to get the Associates somewhere else. My only concern is where she is going to live. She is happy that there are no dorms because, she "doesn't want to live with people partying and bringing random people home to sleep with and even possibly stealing her stuff." I understand that, but I am not sure how to proceed with her living arrangement.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I must say, I completely agree to the section of the above post that says "Like you have to prove something to the world by moving away and spending lots of money on an apartment / dorm room and being around strangers and being away from your family / girlfriend / boyfriend."
I consider it completely impractical to go to a college out of state where every bit of housing around that college has jacked up prices because college students need them. I get great grades, I get everything paid for through the financial aid because I am a FLORIDA RESIDENT, and I am a mother to a one year old. Yeah, imagine me at some other college trying to make that fly on my own, LOL.
I initially looked schools that carried a little more prestige for their Music production curriculums, and the prices just didn't even make since. Through a link on FARK.com (the funnest way to get news, i might add), I found that going to an overly priced college and piling on loans for it was one of the top ten reasons Americans are in debt.
As for the switch to being a state college: personally, this means squat to me, considering all of my experiences at this college have not changed simply because it has a new title. Oh, except that I had to resubmit paper work because of the vast administration changes (supposedly).
I don't know, just a practical look at things. Good luck this semester, all!
