Photos from the show at the News-Journal Center, Fri., Oct. 2, 8-10 PM. I was act one. I played The Entertainer on the piano with a slideshow of my photography [1]. I got a big applause and I didn’t clam up at all, so I was lucky. It was my first time on stage in over a year and this was my largest audience. After my act I took lots of photos below. My Dad also took videos from the audience, including my performance, later in the post. Read my post yesterday [2].
Press info: You can use these photos for editorial purposes such as newspapers, newsletters, and websites. None of the people in pictures signed release forms so don’t use any of these images commercially. Click “high-res” to the right of each thumbnail to download the 10 MP version. They’re pretty grainy… I was using ISO1600 a lot on my Canon Rebel XTi. But they should look alright up to 8×10. Please credit me with the line “Photos by Richard X. Thripp.”
[3] High-Res [4]
Jerred T. Mason reciting an inspirational poem “This is How I Am.” He was act 2 and I was act 1 but I have no photos of my act because I couldn’t take photos while playing the piano. We were both running for Mr. Daytona State. Congratulations to Jerred for winning the Mr. Daytona State title! I got a special consideration certificate. 8:16 PM.
[5] High-Res [6]
Shawana Brown singing “If You Don’t Wanna Love Me,” running for Ms. Daytona State. Shawana placed 2nd but there were only 2 contestants. 8:17 PM.
[7] High-Res [8]
Terri Thomas accompanying Shawana. 8:19 PM.
[9] High-Res [10]
Zach Smith singing a song he wrote titled “Never Saw This Coming” while playing guitar, running for Mr. Daytona State. 8:27 PM.
[11] High-Res [12]
Michelle Underwood with Scott Web and Mark Rosso performing an improvised comedy act called “Interrogation,” 8:34 PM. While Michelle was back stage, Scott asked the audience to suggest 1.) an object Michelle stole, 2.) who she stole it from, and 3.) where it was stolen. Scott chose this: Michelle stole Shrek’s toothbrush at the waffle house. It took Michelle a few minutes to figure it out while Scott and Mark kept hinting at what she stole, who from and where… I asked her after and she said it really was improvised so she didn’t know the answers.
Congratulations to Michelle for winning the Ms. Daytona State title!
[13] High-Res [14]
Tad Jennings singing “Tease Me” as the 4th and final Mr. Daytona State contestants, 8:43 PM.
[15] High-Res [16]
Nicole Brown, President of the Student Government Association (SGA), announcing the beginning of the general talent contestants, 8:48 PM.
[17] High-Res [18]
Center row in the audience. I took this from the stage. There were two other rows but no one in the upper seats. 8:49 PM. Updated 2009-10-06: Michelle Moll says attendance was 460. 500 including performers, judges, SGA volunteers, technicians.
[19] High-Res [20]
After all the Mr. and Ms. Daytona State acts we were allowed to go back into the audience. I shot this from the sidelines. 8:54 PM.
[21] High-Res [22]
Caitlin Hannan singing “Angel” as the first general talent contestant, 8:58 PM. Video on YouTube [23].
[24] High-Res [25]
Brett Copeland playing the Theme from Schindler’s List on the violin, accompanied on the piano by Nina Eustaquio, 9:01 PM. Congratulations to Brett for winning 1st place in the talent show!
[26] High-Res [27]
Jennifer Merens singing “Out Tonight,” 9:05 PM.
[28] High-Res [29]
Rashell Carr reciting an emotional poem titled “You Don’t Live on My Street,” 9:12 PM. I don’t know if she wrote it… it doesn’t say “original” on the program like it does with the other original compositions so I assume she didn’t write it.
The poem was about a teenager who has had a tough life because of her drunken father, drug use, no food or money, and having a child at 14. The message was to not judge other people unless you know exactly what they’re going through.
[30] High-Res [31]
Diane Best singing “I Won’t Complain” about how her faith in God gets her through tough times, 9:13 PM. She sung with no accompaniment and she was great. That’s hard to do.
[32] High-Res [33]
Shaikh Farhana (nickname Farah) performing an Indian Dance to music, 9:17 PM. It was really fast-paced. I like Farah. She’s sweet and she gave me a hug.
[34] High-Res [35]
Elizabeth DeCovic singing “Don’t it Make My Brown Eyes Blue,” 9:18 PM. She has a nice voice.
[36] High-Res [37]
Sarah Rone narrating “The Resistance Story” about a black slave resisting her master’s ill decision, 9:24 PM. This was about ten minutes and Sarah was very animated.
[38] High-Res [39]
The judges watching, 9:29 PM. Bruce Cook, Miriam Ruiz, Cynthia McAvoy, Miguel Rivera, and Geoffrey Kerschner judged the acts and Mr. and Ms. Daytona State was done by ballot throughout the audience. It wasn’t like American Idol at all… the judges made no comments and the performers got no feedback. There really wasn’t time.
[40] High-Res [41]
Lillian Kinch singing “How Could an Angel Break My Heart?,” 9:32 PM. She is a psychology major… maybe she’ll discover the answer to such psychological questions.
[42] High-Res [43]
A photography student taking pictures from the audience, 9:34 PM.
[44] High-Res [45]
Luis Ruiz dancing to Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean,” 9:38 PM. He got a big applause… he even did a moonwalk. I think the applause was more for Michael Jackson, though his dancing was entertaining.
[46] High-Res [47]
Andrea Rossi singing “Trouble” very energetically with a lot of showboating for the crowd, 9:42 PM. She could be a punk rockstar if one of the big labels would pick her up… she has a good voice.
[48] High-Res [49]
All the talented contestants lined up on stage at 9:44 PM. Malcolm Williams was on the program but he didn’t sing and I didn’t see him there. I guess he bailed out.
[50] High-Res [51]
I took this on stage. Jerred T. Mason winning the Mr. Daytona State title, 9:48 PM. Congrats Jerred!
[52] High-Res [53]
Michelle Underwood winning the Ms. Daytona State title, 9:50 PM. Congrats Michelle!
[54] High-Res [55]
Portrait of three of the cheer-leaders after the show, 9:55 PM.
[56] High-Res [57]
9:56 PM. Everyone left quickly. 10 PM is a bit late to end a show.
[58] High-Res [59]
Bruce Cook a box home, 10:12 PM. This is out-of-focus because the light was low and I had to manually focus.
[60] High-Res [61]
My certificate of appreciation. I might use the frame for an 8.5×11 print of one of my photos.
[62] High-Res [63]
My star from the walk of Daytona State Talent Show fame.
Thanks to my Dad [64] for filming these from the audience:
Above: 2:20: Bruce Cook and Dr. Carole Luby making introductory announcements.
Get the Flash Player [65] to see the wordTube Media Player.
Above: 7:30: my act: I played The Entertainer by Scott Joplin on the piano along with a slideshow of 58 photos of my photos [1]. Fast forward to 2:30 to hear me play the piano. I did not win the Mr. Daytona State contest, but when asked my most important values I announced discipline and integrity. You must be disciplined to build integrity because you can’t be honest with others if you are not honest with yourself. In the past two months I’ve been adapting to waking up at the same time every morning (7am, weekends too), eating meals at regular times, and doing photography, music, writing, programming, and homework in large chunks rather than in a scattered approach.
Above: 1:10: Round-up of Mr. / Ms. Daytona State contestants including me. Brian Portwine introduces cheerleaders.
Above: 0:50: Cheerleaders with music.
There was free food and an awards reception in the lobby from 7 to 8 PM. I got there at 6 PM to practice, to chit-chat, and to take photos.
[66] High-Res [67]
Caitlin, back stage, 6:16 PM.
[68] High-Res [69]
Brett and Nina playing some mood music in the lobby, 6:42 PM.
[70] High-Res [71]
Me playing piano in the lobby, 7:00 PM. I played a bunch of classical songs over a 45 min. period. In between songs I took photos and campaigned for Mr. Daytona State.
[72] High-Res [73]
The lobby, 7:03 PM right before the free food was put out. I didn’t get any because I didn’t want to wait in the long line.
[74] High-Res [75]
Cheryl Roundtree, a Daytona State College student who I tutor. 7:06 PM. She came to watch me play piano and for the free food.
[76] High-Res [77]
Michelle doing something funny behind the piano, 7:34 PM.
[78] High-Res [79]
Backstage portrait of Michelle and friends, 7:53 PM, right before the show.
[80] High-Res [81]
“Slaves don’t smile,” Sarah says. 7:54 PM. It was dark… I had to use the flash for auto-focus and the backstage portraits.
[82] High-Res [83]
Tad warming up on the guitar, 7:56 PM.
[84] High-Res [85]
Bruce Cook opening the show, 7:57 PM.
The final rehearsal was Thu., Oct. 1. Here are ten photos from that:
[86] High-Res [87]
Cheerleaders cheering. They were going to go first but Carole moved me to act one.
[88] High-Res [89]
Stage Manager Michelle Moll, looking very busy. She’s the one who got me in the show. I wasn’t going to audition but she called me inviting me to show my photos. When I told her I also play piano, I got in for that too. Thanks Michelle!
[90] High-Res [91]
Jerred practicing his poem.
[92] High-Res [93]
Brett and Nina practicing their duet.
[94] High-Res [95]
Brett and Nina on stage, with Michelle and one of the technical staff coordinating with the technician behind the house. Something with microphones I think. I don’t know the name of the man on the left, but I know he’s important and he’s one of these folks: Scott Green, Jeff Jordan, Sam Elliot, or Trevor Aiello.
[96] High-Res [97]
Andrea practicing “Trouble.” She’s awesome.
[98] High-Res [99]
The same cheerleaders again… I don’t know why they kept asking me to take their picture because it seems like I have a dozen photos of them.
Oh well.
[100] High-Res [101]
One of the cheerleaders. I’m awful with names… often I ask someone their name and then forget it ten seconds later. I have to practice committing information from short to long-term memory on the spot… I think long-term memory is associated with a chemical reaction in the brain. For example, I played The Entertainer entirely from memory, no sheets. It’s in my head and I don’t forget it.
[102] High-Res [103]
Rashell practicing her monologue. She was tired so she just recited it unemotionally.
[104] High-Res [105]
There weren’t many people at the rehearsal… pretty much just the staff and the performers.
A third the performers skipped the Mon. rehearsal. It was fairly sparse. Here are ten photos:
[106] High-Res [107]
Brian and Jerred hashing out ideas.
[108] High-Res [109]
The performers in the house. “House” is theater talk for “audience” or “seats.”
[110] High-Res [111]
Shawana and Terri practicing “If You Don’t Wanna Love Me.” By Fri. they had the lyrics memorized.
[112] High-Res [113]
Zach practicing the song he wrote, “Never Saw This Coming.”
[114] High-Res [115]
Rashell, first rehearsal for “You Don’t Live on My Street.” It was too far over the top… I liked her final version best.
[116] High-Res [117]
Wide-angle shot of Caitlin rehearsing “Angel.”
[118] High-Res [119]
Elizabeth rehearsing “Don’t it Make My Brown Eyes Blue.” When I say “practicing”… that’s the same as “rehearsing.”
[120] High-Res [121]
Andrea practicing “Trouble.” The music was too loud, drowning out her voice. That was fixed by Fri.
[122] High-Res [123]
Michelle, two judges, the technical manager, and Andrea.
[124] High-Res [125]
Jerred filling time on the piano. He played some good tunes! We went home at 5 PM because no one else showed up.
Here is the program that was given out right before the show, Fri. night. If you click on it for the bigger version, all the text is readable.
I like the font. This is a good flyer… simple and effective.
I’m #1 on Part 1 and they got my name right. Yay! This schedule was followed exactly… it was a tight act. No technical problems that I could tell. I timed my piano to my slideshow and it came out perfectly.
I enjoyed all the performances. It was really polished and it was a big step up from the rehearsal just one day before. I didn’t expect much attendance because most everyone I mentioned the show to this week didn’t know about it, but we had a good-sized audience (about 500) who stayed the whole time. It was mostly college students and their families.
The News-Journal Center was a good choice… I don’t think there would have been enough seats in the campus theater! I hope they do another talent show next year.
I spent exactly 6 hours on this post. It took 80 minutes to delete all the blurry photos in-camera today, getting 350 photos down to 150… then I picked out the best 60, edited each one for contrast in Photoshop, saved the high-res copies, batch-processed for the low-res copies, used SUPER to convert the AVIs to FLV, uploaded everything, typed up all the HTML, activated the wordTube WordPress plugin on DaytonaState.org, got it set up, added the video files, made the layout for this post, and then typed all the text and captions. I don’t want to spend this much time or be this in-depth about future events… 6 hours was actually good time for everything I did. I gave it my undivided attention. I hope you found my text, photos, and videos useful and comprehensive.
If you want, you can download my photo-slideshow [128]. It’s a .EXE slideshow created by IrfanView, 23MB. Exactly the same slideshow I used at the show. Skip with the left and right arrow keys.
Final announcements: check out pg. 2 and pg. 10 of the Oct. issue of DSC in Motion [129], the student newspaper, released Thu. Oct. 1. I got portraits and quotes from 8 students for the “In Mind” column and wrote the green column on cutting food waste. If you are taking BSC1005 Survey of Biology, attend my Supplemental Instruction sessions [130]! They’re fun, comprehensive, and sanctioned by the college (I’m a Daytona State work/study student employee).
I’m at Daytona State 5 days a week now and I will be for the rest of the semester. My only courses are Calculus II and Music Appreciate, which is why I have time for all these extra-curricular stuff. But really, Calculus II is like two or three courses… hmm.
